Toasting the New Year Alcohol-Free

Celebrating the New Year is a time-honored tradition, marking an opportunity to gather with family and friends, remembering the old year and making plans for the new. For some, the tradition includes welcoming the new year with a champagne toast, or lifting a glass of another beverage that contains alcohol. But you can toast the New Year with an alcohol-free drink, too. Here are a few winter beverages special enough to welcome the New Year and celebrate in style.

·    Sparkling cranberry juice with a splash of OJ served over ice, sprinkled with candied ginger and garnished with an orange slice makes a bubbly and refreshing toast.

·    A winter classic, hot chocolate is a popular sip for celebrating. Make it more interesting by rimming the cup with chocolate hazelnut butter and crushed hazelnuts.

·    Dip the rim of a mug in caramel sauce and sprinkle it with coarse salt before filling with steaming pressed cider accented with a bit of caramel sauce and a dollop of whipped cream on top.

·    A Not Toddy is a yummy way to celebrate. Brew your favorite tea and add honey, lemon, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and garnish it with a lemon slice.

·    Wake up New Year’s morning with a Mermaid Mary made from spicy clamato juice and a dash of Worcestershire in a tall glass with celery and carrot sticks. Crown it by hanging prawns sprinkled with lime, chili and salt from the rim.

For those who do choose to celebrate with a beverage that includes alcohol, don’t drink and drive.  Arrange for a ride with a designated driver, and keep the New Year a happy one.
